Question: What has the OYRGS done for the Abington Free Library? And what records do you now have free access to?
Answer: OYRGS funds Abington Library’s on-line databases of the New England Historical and Genealogical Society (NEHGR).

Your membership fees to the OYRGS are helping to finance access to the NEHGS databases for everyone in the community. This is a research gem for people researching the New England states—and offers some extra bonus items in the states of N.Y., N.J. and Pa., not to mention England and Ireland.

A premier item is access to the Register, the flagship journal of American genealogy and the oldest journal in the field. The Register has featured articles on a wide variety of topics since its inception, including vital records, church records, tax records, land and probate records, cemetery inscriptions, obituaries, and historical essays. Authoritative compiled genealogies have been the centerpiece of the Register for over 150 years. Thousands of New England families have been treated in the pages of the journal, and many more are referenced in incidental ways throughout. These articles range from large treatments that reveal family origins or present multiple generations of a family to short pieces correcting errors in print or solving unusual problems.

In addition to the above, there are many individual databases that may be viewed by record type. They’re constantly being added to, and of this writing the types include Atlases and Maps, Census, Tax and Voters List, Cemeteries, Church Records, Court Records, Diaries and Journals, Genealogy and Biography, The Great Migration Begins, Heraldry, Immigration, Land Records, Local Histories, Military, Miscellaneous, Newspapers and Periodicals, Social Security Death Index, Societies and Organizations, Town Record, and Vital Records. You can view lists by an alphabetical list or by region, which include Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, New York, England, and Ireland.

You’ll also be able to access the Library Catalog Online. Here, you’ll find more than 200,000 genealogical and historical volumes, countless manuscripts, and other special sources--an excellent source for published genealogies, state, city, town, and village data plus vital statistics. Although many of the books are available on a loan basis, we haven’t determined if this will be available to all Abington users, but OYRGS members can request this arrangement through several of your members who belong to the NEHGS, including Case Zwart.

Visit the NEHGS's Web site to get a brief glimpse of their resources. Review the list below of the databases now available to you at the library.
